MEET THE PTA - Part 4 !!!
MEET THE PTA - Part 4 !!!

Hi! I'm Amanda, and I joined the PTA for the occasional meeting in 2016 and have since increased my involvement gradually.

My current role is secretary and co-treasurer (Sharon told me I would be good at it; I'm not so sure!)

By day I'm a radiographer, working in a London teaching hospital. It's an incredibly rewarding job but one many don't know about. I'm originally from the North East and really miss the sea, especially as we can't visit currently.

Outside of work I enjoy bike riding with my family, cooking and baking and spending time with friends.

To help my mind switch off this year, I have taken up macrame. Keep your eyes peeled for some Coopers Lane coloured crafts at future events! In the past I've also run two half marathons, so may throw in an adult's running challenge at some point!

People say I'm chatty, open, loyal and friendly but I am also shy and modest around new people. This shows in the fact that I often 'forget' that I wrote a children's book!

A fun fact about me? I can belly dance! After having my boys and losing body confidence, I took up belly dancing. It was so much fun, and you may have seen me performing in one of MHG's festivals.

Belly dancing and macrame? I have MANY questions! Thank you Amanda for speaking to us today.

Could you see yourself on the PTA? If so, please get in touch and we can let you know what's involved!

Meet Sharon!

'Hi, I'm Sharon! I joined the PTA in September of 2016 and am now Chairperson/treasurer/general PTA Girl Friday.

You might have seen me over the last five years, either selling raffle tickets dressed as a Christmas elf, or in the playground selling uniform, or at our summer fair in my 'Coopers Lane PTA does it term time only' t-shirt. You may also have seen me at one of our events, either leading the PTA quiz night, dispensing whisky at our ceilidh, or checking numbers at our bingo evening.

I love to help out, and have been volunteering since high school. I was a volunteer children's teacher at the Museum of Archaeology in Durham, I worked as a volunteer teacher for a year in the People's Republic of China, I worked as a volunteer for a homeless shelter in Edinburgh and now I'm on the PTA. And although sometimes the work is a little thankless and can be time consuming, I really do love it and the knowledge that I'm making a difference.

By day I'm a writer. I write for magazines, anthologies, and blogs and have also had three novels published (with books 4, 5, and 6 due out over the next two years). I also love to travel (bucket list country is Argentina... thanks to too many repeat viewings of 'Evita'). I'm very quiet and softly spoken, and it takes a long time for me to trust people and for them to know me. But once I'm friends with someone I'm incredibly loyal and will spoil them afterwards for life... I've had the same best friend since Kindergarten and she moved from Australia to New Cross so we see each other often. My family love to ski (not this year, sadly) and I'm an utter Francophile so my happy place is the French Alps.

Fun facts? I was a high school cheerleader (bottom of the pyramid; always reliable), was once arrested in Asia for staying at the wrong kind of hotel and always dance to cheesy pop music while cooking. I also prefer Dannii to Kylie but we all choose our own poison, don't we?'

Do you think you could see yourself on the PTA? Get in touch with us if yes and we'd love to tell you more about how you can help make a difference to our wonderful school!

Meet Victoria!

'Hi! I'm Victoria and have the somewhat grand title of 'communications officer' which means I help with the poster and flyer designs, website updates and social media posts when needed.

Like all the others I also help with events and stands whenever I can.

I joined the PTA when my daughter started in reception, and became a committee member in October 2018.

I started helping with the PTA because I wanted to support the school community and get to know people. It can be a bit of a juggling act fitting around work and families, but we all just do what we can.

A fun fact about me? I've recently discovered cycling thanks to the North Pole Challenge and got on a bike for the first time in over 20 years and loved it! I now cycle several times a week and do all the family shopping with my new panniers.'

It's so lovely reading about how the North Pole Challenge encouraged Victoria to ride again (it's also raised over £2000 for our school so far!). Thank you so much for talking to us today!

Could you see yourself on the PTA? If so, please get in touch! We're always looking for fresh ideas and new people to talk with!

Meet Jacks !

"My name is Jacks & I have two children at Coopers Lane.

Fun fact - I went to Coopers Lane! I have been the PTA's Sports Officer since the start of this academic year, although I had been volunteering for the last 2 years or so.

The events we had put together were so much fun that I eventually took on a committee role."

Extreme sports are my passion and I love trying something new. There is nothing like the buzz you get being a beginner in sport. Having said that though, I’m a fairly decent snowboarder and used to compete. Post children, and now thousands of miles from the mountain, I took up BMX and eventually became a British Cycling qualified coach with a specialism in BMX. Why do I love sport? Aside from the adrenaline rush, sport allows you to make connections with complete strangers from opposite backgrounds, and that to me is just so special and good for the soul! However my main trade is actually in finance and statistics which is why I absolutely loved running the North Pole competition.

My favourite day out is something like taking the family to a BMX track, oh and food, boy do I love food! It’s probably fair to say 50% of my motivation for sport is to cope with my food intake. I also love music, I probably know the words to all of your favourite songs, but don’t ever let me sing after a gin as I’m truly terrible!

I’m not shy and will talk to absolutely anyone, so say hi!”

Knows the words to all our favourite songs? A terrible singer after a gin? Jacks will make a great addition to our planned karaoke night (once Covid restrictions are lifted)!
Could you see yourself on the PTA? If yes, message us for more details! And thank you to Jacks for taking the time to talk to us today!

Meet your PTA!

Your committee here at Coopers Lane PTA thought we might do some 'meet your PTA' posts to let everyone know who we are, what we do on the PTA and why we make the time to volunteer.

Starting today, we’ll be introducing Sharon, Amanda, Victoria, Claire and Jacks.
We’ll be recruiting for new members in March... if you think you could help make a difference to our wonderful school, please get in touch!

First up ....... Meet Claire !

“Hi, my name is Claire and I am the Events & Social Media Officer for Coopers Lane PTA. I joined the committee in March 2020 and my role is to help run, develop and coordinate events as well as promote and raise the profile of the PTA and our fundraising through our social media channels.

I volunteered for the PTA because I am very passionate about our school and I wanted to put my journalistic and organisational talents to good use. I love organising events and fun activities. I cannot wait to get back to running fun events for the kids & parents once we are able to. I also love our school and it’s amazing staff - my daughter is in reception & my son has just left. And they both love Coopers Lane!”

SOME FUN FACTS ABOUT CLAIRE!

“Singing is my one true love and passion, apart from my family, and I have been a member of Popchoir for over 7 years. I sang on the O2 stage with Barry Manilow in June 2016. It was awesome!”

“I love Thai food and my favourite dish to cook is chicken green curry. Accompanied by a nice glass of white!”

“I love handbags - especially Orla Kiely ones - and have over 30 different bags stashed away in the cupboards!”

30 handbags and a singing history with Barry Manilow? We’re going to need to know more about both of these facts, Claire!

Thank you so much to Claire for starting our week of ‘Meet the PTA’ posts.

Do you think you could see yourself on the PTA? If yes, message us today for more information (and Claire might tell you more about her handbags too!)

In light of current circumstances, regretfully Coopers Lane PTA will be taking a short break.

This hasn't been an easy decision to reach, but as a small committee of volunteers and with school closures in place, we need to put the extra energy and time we normally have for the PTA back into our work and families.

As a parent or carer, you might be feeling a mix of fear, disappointment, bitterness, sadness and confusion right now, and that is perfectly normal. These are uncertain times. But try to remember that there is reason to feel hope too, and that current circumstances will change one day for the better.

We've seen lots of talk about how to support our kids and others during this pandemic, and that's fantastic. But we haven't seen so much about how to support ourselves, and self-care is always important. So, if you're struggling, please reach out for help and support. You are not and never will be alone, and help is always at hand.

We're all in this together, and the committee here at Coopers Lane PTA know how amazing our children, teachers, parents and carers are. We hope to be back again very soon, but in the meantime, we wish you all of our best wishes, support, and hopes to see you all again in the very near future. SCHOOL STREETS HELP NEEDEED IN JANUARY !
SCHOOL STREETS HELP NEEDEED IN JANUARY !

As you are aware, Pragnell Road will become a school street from the beginning of the new term - 5 January - and school need our help to manage the barriers.

School have approached the PTA to ask if we could arrange a rota of parents & carers who could manage the barriers and ensure that only residents enter or exit the street during drop off & pick up.  They will provide the barriers and there will need to be two parents on every shift.

Timings when the barriers will need to be manned are as follows:

Mon - Thurs:

8.15 - 9.30am

2.30pm - 3.30pm

Fri:

8.15am - 9.30am

1.30pm - 2.30pm

The school are already stretched with manning the gates & playground, so would be very grateful if parents & carers could help.

If you can help, please comment below and we will be in contact to discuss further.

School Streets is an amazing initiative to happen at Coopers Lane and we all need to help make it a reality.  It will mean a safer drop off and pick up for parents, carers, staff and most importantly the kids!

Every year, Coopers Lane PTA raises thousands of pounds and donates this money to the school for various projects & resources that they need. But since Covid 19, we've had to cancel all our fundraising events.

We're still doing everything we can to raise funds in innovative and fun ways. But can you help us just a little bit more?

If you're working from home during the pandemic, donating the equivalent of a single commute each month will help us fund exciting Christmas events and so much more, over the next few months.

Our school, like a lot of schools, is facing a funding shortage due to the crisis and we really want to help them by raising as much money as we can.

It’s easy to sign up. Just check out our dedicated website www.donateyourcommute.co.uk and follow the instructions. You can donate £3, £5 or £10 – every donation will help Coopers Lane to continue to thrive in these difficult times !

We know life is uncertain for everyone at the moment, but if you can help, please do !

Thank you.

DOS

  • Do remember to stop your activity tracker once the children have been dropped off.
  • Do continue to maintain Social Distancing, your allocated school start time, and road safety.
  • Do use the app with Parent/Carer supervision at all times.
  • Do let your club coach know if you accidentally recorded personal data so that we can try to remove it.
  • Do get friends and family to sponsor you for the PTA fundraiser
  • Do have an awesome time!

DONTS

  • Dont record Parents/Careers personal activity data to the club.
  • Dont share your login with anyone.
  • Dont upload any photos of your child or their friends, and do not have a profile picture. We can track you on username alone.
  • Dont be shy to ask for any help.

NOTES:

If parents or carers already actively use Strava then you will need a separate login which requires a separate e-mail address.

Strava is being used to gather the data, but statistics will be monitored outside of the app in order to assist with multi child family data.

So that everything is recorded fairly and all children are given an equal chance at the leader board, we will be assuming that everyone within a family will be doing all activities at the same time together. if your children intend to do activities separately to each other then the children would need separate logins (and possibly separate smart phone access) which we understand is not really practical.

Strava is a public app and with the Privacy settings set to Followers then only followers can view your journey map. However if you would like additional security either make sure you do not start activity on your doorstep, or alternatively you can set a Privacy Zone where data will not be tracked within say 200m of your home. However please note that any activity within this privacy zone will not be tracked and contributed to the leader board. Also you can make sure you decline follow request from anyone (except Club Coach Jacks Lampon). Please contact us if you need assistance to set up a privacy Zone.
